. >> governor romney has embraced the ryan budget. well, he has. he's gone back and said, no, he agrees with it. i just want to make sure that, when i say these things, that i don't have the congressman saying, no, no, no, i don't have that position, or that's not the governor's position. >> expect biden to be more pointed and tough than the president was. the question, how aggressive will he be? he doesn't want to come off as unlikable or condescending. one thing biden has going for him, his, quote, unquote, gaffes. in a new pew poll, voters narrowly say they expect ryan to win tonight's debate in a 40-34 margin. although ryan is trying to down play expectations. >> joe biden has been on this stage many times before, and this is my first time. sure, it's a nervous situation because joe biden is one of the most experienced debaters we have in modern politics. but the achilles heel he has is president obama's record. >> and ryan is dealing with unrealistic pressure. the base of his party thinks of biden the same way democrats thought about dan quayle. they consider him a joke. and republican exp

the youtube video, now they're trying to blame the romney/ryan ticket for making this an issue. >> with all due respect that's a bunch of malarkey. when there's a crisis we pull together as a nation. even before we knew what happened to the ambassador the governor was holding a press conference, holding a press conference. that's not presidential leadership. >> the debate moved from foreign policy to the 47%. >> it shouldn't be surprising for a guy who says 47% of the american people are unwilling to take responsibility for their own lies. my friend recently in a speech in washington said 30% of the american people are takers. these people are my mom and dad, the people i grew up with, my neighbors, they pay more effective tax than governor romney pays in his federal income tax. >> governor romney is a good man. he cares about 100% of americans in this country. with respect to that quote, i think the vice president very well knows sometimes the words don't come out of your mouth the right way. >> but i always say what i mean. >> and of course the two sparred over entitlements. >> look, thes

vision. governor romney, the opposite. the last thing we need now is another war. >> congressman ryan? >> we mourn the loss of these four americans who were murdered. when you take a look at what has happened just in the last few weeks, they sent the u.n. ambassador out to say this was because of a protest and a youtube video. it took the president two weeks to acknowledge this was a terrorist attack. he went to the u.n. and in his speech at the u.n. he said six times he talked about the youtube video. look, if we're hit by terrorists we're going to call it for what it is, a terrorist attack. our ambassador in paris has a marine detachment guarding him. shouldn't we have a marine detachment guarding our ambassador in benghazi, a place where we knew there was an al qaeda cell with arms? this is becoming more troubling by the day. they first blamed the youtube video. now they're trying to blame the romney/ryan ticket for making this an issue. with respect to iraq, we had the same position before the withdrawal which was we agreed with the obama administration. let's have a status of for

. now they're trying to blame the romney/ryan ticket for making this an issue. with respect to iraq, we had the same position before the withdrawal which was we agreed with the obama administration. let's have a status of forces agreement to make sure we secure out gains. the vice president was put in charge of those negotiations by president obama and they failed to get the agreement. we don't have a status of forces agreement because they failed to get one. that's what we are talking about. when it comes to our veterans we owe them a great debt of gratitude for what they've done for us including your son, beau. we also want to make sure we don't lose the things we fought so hard to get. with respect to afghanistan, the 2014 deadline, we agree with the 2014 transition. but what we also want it do is make sure that we're not projecting weakness abroad. that's what's happening here. this benghazi issue would be a tragedy in and of itself, but unfortunately it's indicative of a broader problem. and that is what we are watching on our tv screens is the unraveling of the obama foreign polic

to attack which gives joe biden an opening to hit romney so hard -- to hit ryan so hard that mitt romney is going to feel it too. from the sound of it, the vice president seems to be getting his weight up. >> what i've been doing mostly is quite frankly, studying up on congressman ryan's positions. i just want to make sure that when i say these things that i don't have the congressman no, no, no, i don't have that position or that's not the governor's position. so it's mainly getting the factual predicates. >> when it comes to strategy thursday, in this and only this, he may want to steal a move from dick cheney. recall in 2004 when president george w. bush choked in the first of his three debates against john kerry. there was a strong performance against john edwards. cheney took one for the team playing the attack dog and allowing bush to keep his presidential hands clean. although i'd like to see a little more heat from president obama in debate number two, he can still keep it cool and classy while letting biden go all the way off the leash. but even before the first presidential deb

attempt to balance the budget. and what ryan and romney are calling is outrageously stupid. what the president is doing is inadequate. >> okay. al? >> good description. nothing partisan about that description. you know, al, the governor brings up a point. i'm not sure that i agree with how he describes the two sides, but i will say that when joe biden -- let's just take these two issues right here. to talk about the stupidity of this campaign. joe biden won't even talk about raising entitlement -- your date of eligibility for entitlements one year despite the fact when fdr set the life expectancy at 62, we're now up, 79, 80, something like that. and you've got three people working for every one person getting these entitlements. and then on the republican side, this $5 trillion tax cut, the numbers don't add up. it doesn't matter what you do. the numbers don't add up. nor does the administration's belief that if you just tax rich guys, you're going to take care of the deficit. it's just -- it's nonsense. >> joe, you're absolutely right. neither side is seriously addressing this.

to -- american peel want to standup people. so far the romney and ryan people have not been willing to stand up for the things that they have been espousing a long time. i think there's more pressure on paul ryan than vice president ryan. >> we will be watching your state tomorrow. thanks so much for coming on the program. >> thank you. >> let me bring susan back. you tweeted earlier today the vp debates usually don't matter. but is this one different? >> i think it is a little different. do i. you know, traditionally we pay a lot of attention to the debates. lloyd bentsen putting down dan quayle and became inaugurated as vice president that january. it was dan quayle. this time maybe a little different because this election so close. so newly close. because we have got what i have been calling momentum politics, momentum is on the republican side. can joe biden turn that around in the debate and set a better stage for the second presidential debate that we have next week in new york? >> momentum is so important. i think that -- you know, besides the fact you have two debaters who are both real
